Writing in Analog. Too ’95?

When was the last time you wrote in cursive? Be honest. It’s probably been a while, right? For me it’s been AGES. I’m pretty sure I forgot half the capital alphabet. If memory serves me, I think one of them looks like a “2”? It’s a shame only few schools teach handwriting anymore. I mean, talk about taking the FUN out of writing—it’s practically doodling!

I wonder if the cursive alphabet is going the “way of the chalkboard”, if it’s not already. The transition from being widely used up-top to being an overly-priced (or hyped) shade of what it was at the bottom. A rarity, but a novelty. Honestly, me and a few graphic designer friends try to keep the literal “written” word alive by lettering, something I’ve always wanted to dapple in but felt the least adequate about. Roundhand script is the latest and only style I can attempt, despite having my heart set on the bold, wing-tipped, gothic letters I only gawk at in 100-year-old books. My handwriting’s pretty decent, but my calligraphy sucks. So, I devote my love for cursive to the next best thing: drawing!

I’ve recently taken a shine to dip pens. By “recently” I mean about over the last 5 years or so. Despite getting my first try in high-school, I decided to take the plunge and get a sturdy set. Thank you, Japan! I ordered a beginner pen set, by Deleter, that’s perfect for comic-book writing and inking artwork. I even scrawled some words with it a few times.
